Salted Apple Caramel Macchiatos

Updated: Aug 26

One of the most exciting parts of fall is switching from iced coffee back to hot coffee. These Salted Apple Caramel Macchiatos are so warm and satisfying there is a good chance you’ll be making them during every single season, not just fall/winter. This recipe provides instructions on how to make both a hot macchiato and an iced macchiato, so you can sip on these all year round.

Salted Apple Caramel Macchiatos

Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes Yield: 1 macchiato

INGREDIENTS

For the Salted Caramel Apple Drizzle

  • 1 cup organic apple juice or cider

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1 tsp salted butter

  • 3 tbs heavy cream

  • A pinch of flaked sea salt

For the Brown Sugar Apple Syrup

  • 3/4 cup organic apple juice or cider

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1 small apple, sliced

  • 1 large stick of cinnamon

  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg

  • A thin slice of ginger (optional)

For a Hot Macchiato

  • 2-4 tbs apple brown sugar syrup

  • 1-2 cups milk of choice

  • 2 shots strong brewed espresso

  • 1 tbs salted apple caramel drizzle

  • A pinch of flaky sea salt

For an Iced Macchiato

  • 2-4 tbs apple brown sugar syrup

  • 1-2 cups milk of choice

  • 1/2 cup ice

  • 2 shots strong brewed espresso

  • 1 tbs salted apple caramel drizzle

  • A pinch of flaky sea salt

DIRECTIONS

  1. Prepare the Salted Apple Caramel Drizzle. In a small pot, combine 1 cup of apple juice and 1/4 cup brown sugar. Turn stove on to medium heat and boil the apple juice mixture until it has changed colour to a deep brown. This process takes anywhere from 15-25 mins.

  2. Once the apple caramel has changed colour, turn the heat all the way down to low, and add in the butter and cream. Spin the pot to stir in the butter and cream. Be careful has the caramel will bubble and it will be super hot. Let the caramel simmer for a minute or two before removing from heat. Sprinkle with a pinch of flaky sea salt and set aside until ready to use.

  3. While the caramel is cooking, prepare the Brown Sugar Apple Syrup. Combine all of the ingredients for the syrup in a small pot, and turn the heat up to medium/medium high. Bring the syrup up to a boil, then reduce heat to medium low and simmer the syrup for about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and strain syrup.

  4. For a Hot Macchiato: steam the milk of your choice using a milk frother. Pour as much of the apple syrup as you’d like into the bottom of a mug. Pour the hot milk over top, and give it a stir. Pour over the hot espresso, then drizzle with the Salted Apple Caramel Drizzle. Finish with a pinch of flaky sea salt and enjoy right away.

  5. For an Iced Macchiato: pour as much of the apple syrup into the bottom of a tall glass as you’d like. Put your ice in the cup, then pour your milk of choice over top. Give it a stir with a straw or chopstick to combine the syrup into the milk. Pour the espresso over the iced milk, then drizzle on the Salted Apple Caramel Drizzle. Finished with a sprinkle of sea salt and enjoy right away.

NOTES

  • While this recipe is to prepare one macchiato, you will have enough Salted Caramel Apple Drizzle and Brown Sugar Apple Syrup for 4-5 macchiatos.
